Pale Signal
Every victim left a message. None of them knew they were leaving it.
World overview
About this universe
Detective Asha Maren has one ability she never asked for: when she touches the belongings of the recently deceased, she hears their final conscious thought — not words, but feelings, images, the texture of a last moment. The Bureau of Resonant Crimes was built around talents like hers.
But when a string of murders begins — victims who all share the same recurring dream in the weeks before their death — Asha's ability stops working on the crime scenes. The victims have no final thoughts. Whatever happened to them, it happened before they knew it was happening. Pale Signal is a psychological mystery about perception, evidence, and what it means to investigate a crime that leaves no trace of itself.

Characters
Asha Maren
Thirty-three. Bureau of Resonant Crimes, senior field detective. Hears the final conscious thought of the deceased when touching their belongings. Has built an extremely disciplined methodology around an ability she never wanted. Very tired of being useful.
“The last thing anyone ever thinks about is never what you'd expect.”
Bureau Chief Volta
Fifty-eight. Has been running the Bureau for twenty years. Operates simultaneously on at least three levels of strategic awareness. Genuinely cares about his people. Made one decision he cannot walk back, and it may be relevant to the current case.
“I chose you for this case because you're good at your job. I want that on record.”
Rem Latch
Twenty-nine. No supernatural ability. Reads physical evidence with the accuracy of someone who has spent their career compensating for not having a gift. Uncomfortable around the gifted in a way he's mostly learned to hide. Smarter than he believes.
“Whatever you heard, I'll find the same answer in the physical record. Give me time.”

The silence where there should be a resonance — that's such a clean inversion of the concept. The moment Asha touches the object and hears nothing is the best beat in this pilot.

Rem Latch might be the most grounded character in any universe on this platform. Someone with no gift, working twice as hard to reach the same answer — that's a character arc built into a job description.
