World overview

About this universe

The Vigil Bureau is listed in no government directory. Its operatives have no badge numbers. They have something else: each agent made a trade at some point in their career — gave up something of themselves to gain an ability they needed.

Field agent Soren gave up the ability to feel temperature. His partner, Architect Minae, gave up the color blue from her vision. Together they investigate what the Bureau calls 'resonant anomalies' — events that shouldn't be possible but are. Vigil Bureau is a supernatural procedural about people who are slowly becoming less human in service of a world that doesn't know they exist.

Vigil Bureau — Case Zero

Introduction teaser for Vigil Bureau. Presents Soren and Minae arriving at the first anomaly case, intercut with Bureau case file imagery. Tone is quiet, procedural, and slightly wrong in a way that accumulates.

Universe

Characters

Field Agent

Soren

Gave up the ability to feel temperature in exchange for the ability to identify residual emotional signatures at crime scenes. Runs cold to the touch. Has learned to dress carefully. Does not discuss what the trade cost.

Calm under thermal extremesEmotionally perceptiveDoesn't discuss the tradeReliable partner

I can tell you exactly what happened in that room. I just can't feel whether it was warm or cold when it did.

Architect / Field Analyst

Minae

Gave up the color blue from her vision in exchange for the ability to perceive structural impossibilities — buildings, objects, and spaces that exist in violation of physical law. Works in a world that looks slightly wrong to her at all times.

Perceives spatial impossibilitiesSees the world in altered colorPrecise and methodicalDry humor

Everything looks like it's missing something. Most of the time, that's just Tuesday. Sometimes it's a case.

Field Liaison

Talis Horn

Gave up the ability to perceive music — all of it sounds like static now — in exchange for the ability to sense behavioral inconsistency. When someone is withholding, their movements create visible distortions that only Talis can read. Misses music in the imprecise way you miss something you can no longer fully remember.

Reads inconsistency preciselyMelancholic about the tradeMethodical in the fieldSpeaks plainly about difficult things

Every lie has a shape. I see it clearly. I just can't hear the song it used to cover.

Infiltration Specialist

Nara

Gave up their shadow in exchange for the ability to pass through any physical threshold undetected — locked doors, sealed barriers, restricted entries. Nothing perceives them as present. People in crowds look slightly through them. Tends to stand near walls, where the absence is less obvious.

Passes through any thresholdUnperceived in crowdsBrief in conversationExcellent under pressure

Locked doors are fine. It's the open ones that take some adjustment.

The trade mechanic is the most original power system I've seen in a concept this year. Giving up temperature, giving up the color blue — the specificity is what makes it land.
